Children's Eye Care Guide
Children's vision development has critical periods. Taking the right steps at the right time can significantly reduce myopia risk.
Key Stages of Vision Development
0-3 years — Visual system develops rapidly. Minimize screen exposure during this stage.
3-6 years — Vision gradually reaches adult levels. This is the best time to build good eye habits.
6-12 years — Peak myopia onset period. The eyeball is still growing, and near-work pressure is greatest.
12-18 years — If already myopic, controlling progression is important.
Practical Advice for Parents
Screen Time Management
- Under 2: Avoid screens entirely
- Ages 2-5: No more than 1 hour per day
- Ages 6+: Set a reasonable screen schedule with 20-minute breaks
Outdoor Activity
- At least 2 hours of outdoor time daily
- Doesn't have to be sports — playing outside works
- This is the most effective myopia prevention method known
Visual Environment
- Ensure desk lighting of at least 300 lux when studying
- Maintain reading distance of at least 30cm
- Sit upright — no reading while lying down
Regular Eye Exams
- Start annual vision checks from age 3
- Early intervention when problems are detected
Is Vision Training Useful for Children?
Moderate eye exercises are safe for children and can help relieve eye strain. But note: training cannot replace outdoor activity and good visual habits. For children with existing vision problems, follow your eye doctor's recommendations.
